Game watched: Mansfield Town 1-1 Cheltenham Town
With both clubs struggling in the league and recently appointing new managers, this was never going to be a classic - and it wasn't. A dreadful game of football was given two great highlights with two fantastic goals, one for each side; but the rest of the match was nothing to write home about.
As for Field Mill itself, I wasn't overly impressed. It's easy enough to get to and is relatively central in Mansfield - it's right next to the train station, and there's plenty of parking around the stadium for those who come by car. But, there's not much around the ground. I only saw one pub, plus the sports bar at the stadium; and the rest of the surrounding area seemed to consist of a few houses, and loads of retail park space.
Mansfield had specially discounted the tickets for the game, so at only £7 it was an absolute bargain. There were just over 3,000 in attendance, but for all the atmosphere we got it might as well have been 3. The stadium is very open with quite a bit of distance between stands, so any noise there was just drifted off - we barely heard the home support even when they scored. It probably doesn't help that only 3 stands are actually open - one is permanently closed due to safety concerns, and is now just home to a huge amount of advertising hoardings, the TV cameras, and plenty of balls that get stuck on the roof.
The three stands that were open are your typical indentikit stands that cropped up around the country in the late 90s/early 00s, so there's no real character to the ground. The seats in the away end are quite close together, and for a big chap like me (I'm 6'4"), legroom was a bit tight. Facilities were surprisingly lacking for a ground that is quite modern as well - the toilets were fine with plenty of space etc., but there was only one very small food kiosk that had run out of burgers before half time. I got a steak pie instead, which was nice enough, but wasn't overly warm. The Bovril I got could also have been warmed. However, the prices were some of the best I've seen in the league (£2.50 a burger, £1.20 a hot drink), so fair play to the club for that.
Overall, a middling stadium that I won't rush back to - but at least it doesn't cost a fortune like far too many these days.
