Luzhniki2008 visited Pride Park Stadium on 18/10/1997

Game watched: Derby County 2-2 Manchester United

By the 1990s and the Premier League era, The Baseball Ground was really showing it’s age. To comply with the all seater rules, seats had been bolted onto what was terracing in the old terraced sections of the ground. The stadium capacity as a result of the end of terraces had fallen to just over 18,000 and all 4 sides needed rebuilding. The club saw it as more effective to move to a new stadium rather than re-develop the Baseball Ground. For me, I was sad to see the end of a stadium like this with so much history and character.

The brand new Pride Park stadium was opened for the 1997-98 season, and I went there early that season as a Manchester United away fan. Visiting there early in that season I noticed how very similar it looked to Middlesbrough’s new Riverside Stadium which had opened only 2 years earlier. Facilities were far better for supporters and there was far more commercial revenue available there, but the stadium lacked the history or unique character of The Baseball Ground. The capacity of Pride Park is just over 33,000. Derby were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2001-02 season, returning just once for the 2007-08 season.
I've only been there by car and parked on a pay car park about 10 minutes walk from the ground, opposite Toys R Us and near Pizza Hut there. it's usually taken me up to 20 minutes to get off this car park after the match.
