BurnSand visited Crown Ground on 20/10/2019
Game watched: Accrington Stanley 2-0 Ipswich Town
League ground No 89 and match No 2 on my October 2019 trip. Sunday noon kickoff in front of National TV cameras. I was staying in Bradford so I took the first train of the day to Accington at 10.08 and arrived about 50 minutes before the game. I walked to the ground and picked up my pre-ordered ticket, went in and visited the sports bar in my stand to get the first pint of the day before the game started.
This was Ipswich's first ever league visit to Accrington and they had brought a sizeable crowd with them. The attendance was 3,567 and about 500 higher than Stanley's average. Ipswich were unbeaten and topped the league when they arrived. On the day, they didn't look class and were soundly beaten. Colby Bishop scored twice in the first half, the second from the penalty spot. The home side's main feature in the programme, Ross Sykes, was sent off with 12 minutes remaining for an elbow and a push, but Stanley held out for three deserved points.
The stadium is incredibly intimate and you're never far from the pitch. I sat with a couple of regulars who were betting before the game on the number of times the ball would go over the roof. I had statisticians and club tweeters just behind me where I sat. Best of all, after the game the stadium bar served £1 pints for an hour in celebration of Stanley victory.
The weather wasn't too bad. Something I'm sure the Ipswich supporters without roof over their stand could appreciate, if the game itself didn't bring much to cheer about.
