BurnSand visited Fratton Park on 24/02/2018
Game watched: Portsmouth 0-2 Blackpool
Last game of a four-game mini tour in February 2018. I arrived on train from Victoria already on Friday to stay two nights in Portsmouth. I was staying at the ibis hotel next to Fratton Park, so it was a short walk to reach the ground. It also gave me time to do some sight-seeing by walking to vinyl shops that were within reach. There was one in Fratton Road, Sweet Memories, that had many interesting items to offer. I raided it on Saturday morning, then had lunch right across the street at The John Jacques. By then, blue-clad Pompey fans were everywhere.
I had a seat in the South Lower Stand and where I was sitting I was really low, more or less at he same level as the pitch. Pompey came into the game ten points ahead of the visitors Blackpool. On the day, it didn't matter much. Pompey should have been ahead when Blackpool's No. 7 Kyle Vassell stole the ball from Portsmouth No. 7 Christian Burgess and coolly slotted it home just before half-time.
In the second half Clark Robertson doubled the lead with a header after the guys in blue thought they had already cleared a corner. They were disorientated and left Robertson without a marker when the ball came back from the other long line.
It's nice to visit a stadium where the fans come out in support of their team independent of the league they are playing in. The attendance was close to 18,000 on the sunny day in February when I visited my league ground #79. The season I went there only Bradford City had a better average in L1 than Pompey's 17,916
The following day I flew home from Heathrow.
