Game watched: Colchester United 1-2 Aston Villa
It was a day when I was wondering about if it really was worth doing the 92. I had come up to Colchester on a morning train after saying goodbye to my daughter who went to Heathrow to fly home. I had found my hotel and headed out the door with my goretex rain jacket on to find lunch. After lunch, I took the decision to try locate some vinyl shops and got quite far from the hotel. One of the shop addresses I had was apparently the post office and the other shop was closed. By the time I had reached the post office it was really pouring down. I got back to the hotel soaking wet and had to try to dry my jeans with a hair blower as it was the only pair of long trousers I had with me.
When it was time for the game, the rain was gentler. I had a couple of pints at a pub and then located the stadium bus. It turned out that the guy selling bus tickets had not appeared so it was a free ride to and from the ground. When I got to the ground I had a cheeseburger, a standard football meal when I haven't found a place for dinner.
For the second night running, it was L2 vs Championship for me. The Colchester goalie made a blunder and handed Scott Hogan 1-0 on a platter already in the 7th minute, but Colchester got a great chance to equalise from the penalty spot, but Jed Steer saved a tame effort from Mikael Mandron. To make matters worse for the home side, Frankie Kent steered a cross into his own net in the 19th minute. Kent got his revenge 20 minutes later when he pulled one back in the right net. Throughout the second half the rain made it hard for the players and the game finished without further goals.
After the game, it was the free bus again downtown and then a walk back to the hotel. The next day started with a trainride back to London. After another trainride I was in Manchester for the Thursday game between Bury and Sunderland.
