Game watched: York City 1-3 AFC Wimbledon
On this morning I was in Sheffield and deciding on which game to go to. York, Chesterfield or Burton were the three options within reach and I chose to go to York. In May 2016, they were relegated to the National League. Since then, it has happened twice that a club whose league ground I just had visited was relegated in the same season. Hartlepool United and Yeovil share that disappointment with York.
At this time, York City was in the middle of a three months long streak without a win, 15 league games produced 5 draws and 10 losses, but when I saw them they were still three points above the relegation zone and miraculously, they would stay above the relegation places for another month.
Ade Azeez had put Wimbledon 1-0 up in the first half. Ben Wilson in the Wimbledon goal dropped a high ball in the second half to set up York's Vadaine Oliver for the equaliser after 60 minutes. York's hope of a point were short-lived as the visitors produced two more goals in the last half hour.
The Wimbledon supporters were singing 'You'll be sacked in the morning' at the end of the game and two days later, on Monday, the York manager Russ Wilcox was sacked.
Before the game, I had had a great pub lunch in York and I also stayed for dinner before taking a train back to Sheffield. The day after I was to fly home from Manchester Airport with 61 league grounds visited.
