Game watched: Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 Torquay United
Quite a memorable day. I was staying in a hotel at Heathrow while in transfer from Italy to the US. I came in on Friday evening and left Sunday morning. Somehow, I managed to get late for the planned train from Marylebone to High Wycombe. On the train I sat down next to a guy in Wycombe's colours and told him I would tail him to the ground. He didn't mind and we shared a taxi to get us to the ground. We probably arrived no more than 30 minutes before the game.
It turned out to be a special promotion match so the entrance fee was just £5. I got a good seat in the huge Frank Adams Stand.
Ten days earlier, Gareth Ainsworth had been appointed caretaker-manager for the Chairboys. This was his third match in that role and it turned to be his first win. The amazing thing is that he's still in that chair almost seven years later. Ainsworth himself, then still playing, provided the cross for Wanderers first goal. Torquay equalised, but in the second half Wycombe's Josh Scowen restored their lead. It became the last goal of the match and I had just watched Gareth Ainsworth take his first win.
I walked the three miles back to the station. Around 2/3 of the distance I had a lengthy stop at a sports pub that could provide me with dinner and a couple of pints. There I watched the Gunners turn around a 1-0 West Ham lead at Upton Park.
