Game watched: Reading 2-1 Derby County
I had been on work in the Cotswolds during the week and stayed two extra nights in London to watch a Saturday game. I chose to go to Reading since I had not watched any of the teams playing before. I was to return to Madejski nine months later when almost all other games in the south were postponed because of frost. However, on this occasion it was the last game of the league season and nice, sunny weather. Arriving by train to Reading, I spent a good hour at The Three Guineas before catching a Stadium bus to the ground.
Reading were already in the playoffs and rested Shane Long. He had played the 45 previous league games. Robbie Savage made his final league appearance and was to walk off in his socks and underwear. Michail Antonio, now at West Ham, was in the Reading side that defeated Derby 2-1 on this day.
Ian Harte gave Reading the lead from the penalty spot and Jamie Ward equalised soon after. Before half time, Harte missed a second penalty as it hit the post. Robson-Kanu won the game for Reading in the second half.
Afterwards, it was back to London and a flight home the following day.
